Olivia lived a life full of purpose and exuberance. She was genuine, kind hearted, and no respecter of person. Olivia was uninfluenced by consideration of someone’s popularity, but was rather a friend to all. Those blessed to know her love to recall memories they shared and have spoke not just of her outer beauty but also of her contagious laughter, sweet spirit, and vibrant personality. On June 27, 2014 a tragic vehicle accident took the life of this extraordinary young lady and forever broke our family, as we couldn’t imagine a day without our beloved Liv. After receiving the devastating news, we were reminded of a selfless decision she made at the tender age of sixteen, when without hesitation Liv checked the box to become an organ donor on her drivers license. Though heartbroken and faced with unfathomable grief, we desired to respect and grant her wishes and agreed to let Olivia give the precious gift of life through organ donation. Olivia’s gift of life does not diminish the pain and sorrow our family endures. But does offer a morsel of peace knowing through Liv, other families are able to experience hope and happiness while simultaneously keeping her loving spirit alive.
Through organ donation Olivia was able to save countless lives. Her heart now beats for a 10-year-old boy. He is a student from Tennessee. The recipient of Olivia’s right kidney is a 55-year-old disabled man from Missouri. He enjoys cooking, and watching TV. Olivia’s left kidney was given to a 53-year-old man also from Missouri. He is married with children and works in information security. A 27-year-old man who lives in Missouri received Olivia’s liver. He is married and works full time as an IT technician. The recipient of Olivia’s lungs is a 61-year-old woman from Missouri. She is married with children and grandchildren and is a nurse. Through her gift of tissue donation countless lives will continue to be touched.
The gift of life she gave has affected the lives of not only her recipients, but also their many family and friends.
Though she was taken from us to soon, and our arms were left empty. Our hearts are full of cherished memories we hold dear and are impossible to forget. Liv a Life of Love is a charitable fund set up through Community Foundation of the Ozarks to honor Olivia Lauryn Didway, her life and the greatest legacy she could ever bestow, the precious gift of life. Our mission is to inform, educate, and encourage individuals to register as organ and tissue donors to save lives.
All donations and proceeds from fundraisers benefit the Liv a Life of Love memorial scholarship fund and Mid-America Transplant Family House in St. Louis, MO. Family House offers comfortable, safe and affordable mid- to long-term, single-family apartment living for patients and their families who must relocate to St. Louis to receive life-saving pre- and post-transplant care.
Organ transplantation is one of the most miraculous medical breakthroughs of the 20th century. About 4,100 transplant candidates are added to the national waiting list each month. Each day, about 77 people receive organ transplants. Yet, sadly there are not enough organs available to help everyone in need. As a consequence, an average of 18 people die every day waiting to receive an organ.
We desire to follow Olivia’s altruistic lead by encouraging organ and tissue donation. We believe it is an important social responsibility. Help us promote donation, because in each of us is the power and potential to save a life.
Without the organ donor, there is no story, no hope, no transplant. But when there is an organ donor, life springs from death, sorrow turns to hope and a terrible loss becomes a gift. – UNOS
